GBA DOES have a contrast option?

As it turns out, the GBA does have a contrast feature...only its hidden away. You can darken or birghten the screen to your liking. However, finding that switch will void your warrenty and most likely mess up your GBA; I suggest that you dont try it.
If you would like to try it, however, click on the link to find out.
Thanks to IGNpocket (and a special thanks to my friend overkill2/antipop59 for reminding me of this news story)

UPDATE: Prior to former beliefs, new information (although unconfirmed) reports that this "feature" is not an automatic contrast adjuster. It is something factory workers use to preset the GBA to the desired level of contrast. they use a special adjustment cartridge and tool to get it that way, and there is no way to return it to normal without being a profesional. Nintendo wont even take them back without them being 'broken'.
Once again, this has not yet been confirmed.
Links are provided from people who have ideas about this. I suggest not to make any hasty actions until Nintendo speaks.
(more on this as it breaks)

Enix's Dragon Warrior coming to the 'CUBE!

Electronic Playground is reporting that Enix's most praised game: Dragon Warrior, will be coming to the GAMECUBE. Dragon Warrior is probably the most well-known RPG ever (moreso than SquareSoft's Final Fantasy).
Exix is also reported to be working on a "special" game for the GameBoy Advance.
Much appreciation to Tendobox for the breaking news.

Ladies and gentlemen, the moment we have all been waiting for is almost here. NNO will be launching in a few short days. The site will include vBulletin forums, too. After the site launches, a month or so later the NNO e store will launch, including games, and alot of other fun stuff. Looking into the future, if NNO does as good as everyone expects, we will go multi platform, opening up a Sony Section, and eventually opening up Sections for Sega, and Microsoft.

Demand for Dev.Kits!

It appears that developer intrest has sky-rocketed following the days of E3. Both publishers and developers alike (both large and small) have been impressed by Nintendo's showing.
One of Nintendo's sites, WarioWorld, had this to say:

"Nintendo is unable to start up a Nintendo GameCube independent developer program at this time. The response from developers and publishers at E3 has been tremendous. As we expected, the demand for dev kits has again exceeded our supply. The dev kit situation will improve in the next couple months, however we're very reluctant to make any commitments as to a specific date."

It seems Nintendo's third party support for the GAMECUBE isnt in the jeopardy some thought.

Shrek, a monster seller

TDK Mediactive's movie licensed fighting game Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown for GBC is selling good. It has sold 100,000 copies on GBC. The movie is doing great too, it made about $200 Million, not bad at all.

Here is what Vincent Bitteti had to say: "The shipping numbers for Shrek were within expectations and we are pleased with the sell through to date. The success of the DreamWorks film has translated to a great awareness for the interactive franchise, and we look forward to more interactive Shrek adventures, beginning in the fall with our exclusive title for the Xbox."

Thanks to CC for the news.

Game Boy Advance does have some competition, maybe.

SNK USA is coming back. Its is unknown if they will make NGPC anymore, but they have released a new game for it. Another company is seeking the rights to distribute it themselves, but we don't know if they got permission. The Neo Geo Pocket Color (NGPC) was a short lived handheld, it sold about 300,000 units before SNK had to go out of buisness because of debt. They are now out of debt, and are going to make a comeback, but as I said, it is unkown what SNK's plans are. The best selling game for NGPC was Sonic Pocket Adventures wich sold 120,000 copies. For those of you that don't know what NGPC is, wich isn't unlikely, I have included a picture of it.

Thanks to KOF4ever from Cloudchaser forums for the information.

I would also like to add that SNK was a big supporter of Nintendo 'back in the day'. Thanks again KOF4ever.

New Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 movie

Activision O2 has just released a new movie of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 which is due out on, or near Nintendo's GAMECUBE launch (November 5th). Its a long movie, for all my fellow 56k'ers out there, but its well-worth the wait.
THPS3 will also be making its way to the GameBoy Advance as well as GameBoy Color later on in the year (no date has been set for those).

Amusement Vision's pres. on GCN

In a Edge Magazine column, Toshihiro Nagoshi spoke about why he is choosing the GAMECUBE for his future gaming plans:

". . .I only stayed for three days at E3 but I am now exhausted. The interviewers always asked the same thing 'Why GameCube?' I would say 'Because I wanted to' and 'I don't see what would be wrong working on hardware developed by a company with such a prestigious history in the industry'

I'm really excited because as a creator, Nintendo is one of the companies I've always wanted to work with, In addition to that, Nintendo is quite a challenging partner. So the fact that it is now possible makes me very happy. . ."

The little handheld that could

Nintendo's GameBoy Advance has sold incredibly well during the week of its launch. Over 600,000 units so far. Read Nintendo's press transcript for more:

"Redmond, WA (June 18, 2001) - The best selling video game platform in history is selling better than ever. Nintendo's Game Boy® Advance sold through half a million units during its first week on the market, making it America's fastest selling game system ever.

Nintendo of America Inc. announced today that the portable Game Boy Advance is a virtual sellout across the country, with 500,000 systems sold through to consumers since its launch June 11. But shortages should be temporary, as Nintendo shipped more than 100,000 additional units over the weekend, with total shipments on track to reach more than 1 million by the end of June.

"We knew demand was going to be strong - but this is a record-setting response," says Peter Main, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America. "The good news is that we are able to ship approximately another 500,000 units by end of June with further product to become available through July and August."

No video game system in history has exploded so quickly at retail. Nintendo's last new hardware launch occurred in 1996 for the Nintendo® 64 and set an all-time industry record by selling through almost half a million units in four weeks. By achieving half a million sales in a single week, Game Boy Advance is clearly the fastest selling U.S. video game system ever.

Game Boy Advance decisively breaks the existing boundaries for handheld video gameplay, boosting screen size by 50 percent. Game Boy Advance actually delivers a sharper picture than current 32-bit and 64-bit consoles playing on a 27-inch television. Game Boy Advance displays more than 500 times as many on-screen colors and is several dozen times as powerful as Game Boy Color. The system is backward compatible with existing Game Boy and Game Boy Color software."

Mario and Sonic together on a same game?

The most recent issue of N64 Magazine has some very intresting information about the supposed SEGA and Nintendo joint project:

"Despite Sega admitting that it felt a bit odd to see a Nintendo console in their own [E3] stand, they're fully committed to Gamecube. As well as future conversions of the best of the Sega Sports games - including NFL 2K2 and NBA 2K2 - rumours suggest a conversion of the excellent Daytona USA is already in the works. But the really big news is that we'll soon see a joint Nintendo-Sega title that'll bring Sonic and Mario together for the first time. Belief-Beggaring."

Nothing is for certain...but it still makes one wonder.

Merrill Lynch loves Nintendo

Gaming-Age has a great report on Merill Lynch with Nintendo news. Here's some: In a new research report recently released, the Investment firm of Merrill Lynch has raised their rating on Nintendo from Accumulate to Buy. The reason for the upgrade is a more favorable outlook for the GAMECUBE as well as a positive outlook for the Game Boy Advance.
As far as the CUBE is concerned, ML believes that risks associated with software development like Nintendo experienced with the N64 have been resolved, and expects a rich software line-up from the time of the platform release. Also, they cite an extremely favorable reception of the NGC at E3 and the very reasonable price for the NGC.

Based on these favorable developments, Merrill has raised its expectations of GAMECUBE shipments. Previously, they had expected a bearish 1 million units to be sold in Nintendos fiscal year ending March 2002, with half in the US and half in Japan. However, ML says that Nintendo has indicated to them that US distributors have already requested 4 million machines, which is equal to Nintendos shipment volume forecast. For the next fiscal year, shipments are expected to reach 10.3 million units, 2.5M in Japan, 5M in the US, and 2.8M in Europe). This strong outlook is due to robust demand in the US and Japan, the start of sales in Europe, and the expansion of volumes on the production of the Flipper chip to 1M a month from 600,000 a month. Cumulative shipments are expected to reach 34.8 million by the fiscal year ending March 2005, with about 25% for Japan and the rest overseas.

Eternal Darkness impressions added

I finally got the first, of many to come, hands on impressions from E3 up. I will have more soon so keep checking back for more updates.

Eternal Darkness Impressions

Better late then never.....right?

Ok I finally have a chance to get my E3 impressions up, I hope I can get it all up today. If not I will put alot more up tommorrow.

I arrived at LAX at about 7am on Thursday, May 17. I went straight to the LA convention center and waited around for a couple of hours. Finally the doors opened and of Course I went stragiht for the Nintendo booth. I was in awe of the sheer size of the booth and all the lights and sounds. And the first thing I saw were all of these floating GameCube logos. At that time I knew I was in heaven. The first game I saw was Super Smash Brothers Melee. Now keep in mind there will be individual previews and hands on impressions for each game in the Gamecube section, so I won't go into specifics about the game.

I was very impressed with nintendo's booth, they hand several playable GCN games, a big screen above the center of the booth that showed highlights of Metroid Prime, Mario Kart fo GCN, Donkey Kong Racing and several different game demos. They were also playing different theme songs from different games. Some songs I heard were the Zelda theme songs, and the one that suprised me and had me confused for a bit, was Phantasy Star Online. They also gave visitors to the Nintendo booth a chance to win a Gameboy Advance. You had to go up to the center of the booth, to an information desk and get a card, at that desk they stamped the card with "The Nintendo Difference." Then you had to go to the GBA section and play a game, then you got a stamp of a GBA. Next you had to go to the GameCube section and play a game over there. Then you got a GameCube stamp. After you had all three stamps you could go back and stand in line for a chance to sit down at a table along with 14 other perspective winners. They put a GBA in one of the slots, and put a squishy GBA, GCN and a GBA carying case in the other 15 slots. They then spun the will and whoever the GBA landed in front of won, and guess what I am a proud owner of a free GBA.

OK back to the subject. Nitendo's booth was constantly crowded, you could hardly walk around at all, all three days. Throughout the three days I made my way around to every booth and played as many games as possible. I wasn't impressed with xbox's showing at all. Most the games there weren't impressive and had some framrate problems. Sony had a nice showing but nothing we haven't seen already. I was most impressed with the GameCube, the different games they displayed further verified that they do intend to cover all demographics and genres. The games all looked and played great. Ok now I will get to the stuff you have been waiting for the hands on impressions and screen shots of the game.

Sonic In SSB2?

I got my new EGM today (with a killer GBA section), and in the QuaterMan (rumors) said a rumor going around was that Sonic would show up in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Now, this is kind of far out there, because Sonic is a 3rd party character. Even Rare's mascots aren't in it, and they are a 2nd party. The QMan is right about 90% of the time..so don't count it out yet, it just seems like a long shot. We sure can hope though.

Why Dino Planet turned into Star Fox

RareWare updated it's web site wit this info, explaining why Dinosaur Planet was turned into Star Fox: Adventures
-Brian

Q5: Why did you decide to apply the Star Fox licence to Dinosaur Planet?
It just so happened that even as Rare were in development on the original version of Dinosaur Planet, NCL were getting down to work on a Star Fox game in much the same vein. The similarities between the projects offered too great an opportunity to pass by, so the properties were merged and the project moved from N64 to GameCube to allow for the extra development time. Advantages? No conflict between two similar titles on the market; developers freed up for other projects; the promise of a first-rate franchise title within the first few months of the GameCube's launch. We're sorry if you were really looking forward to the N64 version, but at the end of the day these changes will result in a better game.

GameCube= No Territorial Lockout? All Signs Point To Yes!

Planet Gamecube is reporting that the GameCube may not have a territorial lockout when it arrives in Japan later this year. A PGC source, who talked to Ken Lobb on the subject, said that Lobb has noticed many people importing systems from Japan, and that Nintendo is keeping this in mind.

The Game Boy Advance does NOT have a territorial lockout, which might indicate that the GC will not either, considering that the systems are going to interact with eachother, in one way or another.

Although Nintendo's last console, the N64, did have a territorial lockout, all signs are pointing towards no lockout for the cube. Look for an announcment soon from Nintendo on the subject, but untill then, keep your fingers crossed. Keep checking back here for new information as we get it.

Don't count Square out yet..

At a shareholder meeting this morning in Tokyo, Square president Hisashi Suzuki delivered disappointing financial news to investors. Largely blamed on the delay of Final Fantasy X for the PlayStation 2 and the PlayOnline Network, Square profits tumbled for the fiscal year. More importantly however, president Suzuki-san briefly addressed developmental concerns. Specifically, in light of expected competition from Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's Xbox, Suzuki-san said Square is interested in moving away from creating standalone console titles to delivering their games to a worldwide audience in the future.

Now all we need is Mr. Yamauchi (president of Nintendo Co. LTD) to lighten up a little.

3rd Party Games On GameCube

While at the E3 confrence, I wanted to find out what some of the larger 3rd parties felt about GAMECUBE and what there plans are for the future. I devoted the entire third day to going around to all the different developers booths. Here is what I found out:

Koei- Not at this point in time, but will in the future; very impressed with GameCube showing.

Natsume- Will support GameCube with all major franchises by 2002

Crave- Will support GameCube with major franchises

Konami- Cannot announce anything at this time

Eidos- Cannot announce anything at this time

Square- No plans thus far, but they were very impressed with GameCube.

Capcom- We already know they have games coming to GameCube. I asked about the rumor floating around the Internet Capcom supporting GameCube with a lot of exclusive titles and was told that they cannot announce anything yet.

Namco- Another one that we already know about. I talked to one of the lead artists for Namco of America, he said that they have development kits for GameCube, although he hasn't worked on it, but he also confirmed that the PS2 is a (in his own words) a b*tch to develop for.

Activision- Supporting the GameCube

Midway- Supporting the GameCube

Infrogrames- Couldn't get much, but it sounded like to me that they will be supporting GameCube

The general feeling across the board was that the GCN was very impressive, and that the developers were excited about what they saw. Now that the NDA's have been lifted from developers you can expect to see alot more developers announcing support for the GCN, and bringing over some of their heavy hitting titles. More as it comes available.

Sega announces 10 Gamecube games.

Sega announced 10 games for Gamecube at E3, they also announced PSO version 2,a new Sonic Adventure Game, and Sega sports games for Gamecube. Thye also showed Monkey Ball for Cube:).

Nintendo showed off Donker Kong Racing, Luigis Mansion pics, Metroid Prime pics, wave race pics, and MANY others. So far things are looking nice, and the best has yet to come from Nintendo.

Thye have a good list of Mature titles for Gamecube, such as Dark Blade, After Dark (yet to be shown), EA announced 10 games for Gamecube, and Sega announced Sports games for Gameucbe too. Watch out EA.

A very disspointing announcement from square concerning all consoles took place, Square said they are going to stay PlayStation2 exclusive...Personally, I think this announcement sucks. But as I think of it more, im starting to belive Nintendo doesn't need them...they have got Zelda, Mario RPG's, and Sega RPG's.

Oh, by the way, GO NINTENDO!!! GO NNO!! :).

Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2 in game pics.

Next-Gen Magazine had the opportunity to play Rogue leader recently and have included a 10 page impression in this months magazine. The pics that were shown are about a month old and do not include any bump mapping, full screen anti-alliasing, and there is still alot more texturing and lighting to be added.

Note these pics were scanned out of the magazine and have lost some quality due to this. Also there will be three playable levels at this years E3. I suggest you go out and by this issue of Next-Gen it will definitely be worth your while.
