E3 coverage E3 is almost upon us and I wanted to let everyone know that I will be at this years E3. As of right now, I am only going to the actual floor show. Since I am new in the business I wasn't able to get in the Nintendo press confrence, although rest assured I am trying to pullany strings possile to get in there. I will be updating the site at least every hour, unless I am standing in line to play the next great game on the Gamecube. So we are now about 15 days until Nintendo is going to show the world that they have what it takes to retake the lead in the console wars. The only pics you'll ever see of Thunder Rally IGN has got a hold of some concept art done by retro studios for Car Combat (Thunder Rally). Although the game is now on a indefinite hold, these pics are quiet impressive. If they reprensent things things to come, the x-box and PS2 have something to be worried about, although they do already. This game is supposed to be a Twisted metal type game with some spice. Check out these pics

Reverb and Drums Surround Jungle Sounds and Volume Control Panning German Techno Orchestra Gamecube coming to the US early? Nintendo Japan confirms that its next-generation GameCube console will launch in the US early. Nintendo Japan's executive vice president Atsuo Asada told Reuters on Wednesday that the GameCube console will launch in Japan this July, with an earlier than expected debut of September 2001 in the US. A spring 2002 release is planned in Europe. The next-generation platform was previously set for an October launch in the States and the fact that Asada has not only confirmed that a 2001 debut is still on track, but also bumped up the release by one month is further proof that GameCube will not be delayed. The console will see a full unveiling at May's Electronics Entertainment Expo, and Nintendo plans to market the machine alongside its own super-handheld the Game Boy Advance later this year. The GBA is expected to have 60 titles available by the holiday season. Thanks to IGN for the story
Dinosaur Planet Officially on Gamecube Sources close to Rare finally confirm that the company's 3D Zelda killer is a GameCube launch title. In what is bound to come simultaneously as bad news for Nintendo 64 owners and a spectacular break for GameCube hopefuls, sources close to Rare have positively confirmed that Dinosaur Planet has been scrapped as a 64-bit game in favor of a release for Nintendo's next-generation console. The 3D action-adventure is scheduled to ship at system launch in North America later this year. Though it has long been thought that Dinosaur Planet should make the platform switch because it would not get the attention it deserves as a cartridge release, the team working on the project allegedly fought both Nintendo and Rare on the redesign. Reports from those close to the product suggest that a final decision to terminate the 64-bit release and revamp the title for GameCube was not made until November of last year, just a few months after the August unveiling of the future console. Exactly what content changes will ultimately be introduced to Dinosaur Planet as it transitions to GameCube are not yet known, but logic tells us that, at the minimum, the title's visuals will see dramatic improvements as 3D models are re-rendered and higher resolution textures applied. It seems safe to assume that speech and music samples will similarly improve to take advantage of GameCube's superior audio capabilities and greater storage medium. Since Nintendo's own Legend of Zelda title will not be ready in time for a GameCube launch, it is highly likely that Dinosaur Planet will serve as its replacement. After all, it is an epic 3D action-adventure with nearly identical gameplay mechanics to Link's own right down to a similarly styled control scheme and item-based character building structure.
Japan On Gamecube The biggest hitters in Japan, including Sega and Namco, officially comment on GameCube. The latest issue of overseas gaming magazine Famitsu Weekly has published a piece focused entirely on Japanese software companies' opinions of Nintendo GameCube. The magazine interviewed all of the major players, including Sega, Capcom, Game Arts, KOEI, Konami and, of course, Namco. Following is what they had to say: Yoshiki Okamoto, director of research and development at Capcom, indicated full support of Nintendo's next-generation console. "We plan on putting a lot of effort behind GameCube," he said, and added that the firm doesn't yet have a complete picture of where the console is headed. Game Arts officials told the magazine that the industry is in store for a big change and that Nintendo is the only company really serious about making games better. As such, the developer is looking forward to what Nintendo has in store this year, and will be pursuing a mult-platform release strategy. KOEI's Keiko Erikawa commented that while it seems Nintendo's strong suit is the younger crowd, it's highly possible that if KOEI was to bring their more adult-oriented titles to the console it could help attract a wider audience. In the case of Nintendo, Keiko stated that it will be a question of whether or not Nintendo can market the GameCube to older audiences so that it can attract more support from third-parties. Konami, meanwhile, stated that it is still securing its GameCube and Xbox plans and there are no plans to make either console the company's "main focus" this year. The firm's Mr. Kitakami said that it can be costly to take on new hardware compared to sticking with PS2 and Game Boy Advance development, which it plans to do through the remainder of the year. Finally, Namco's own Yasuhiko Asada seemed very open to GameCube development. "Nintendo is the one to watch," he stated and added, "we have great interest in making the GameCube our 'target' machine." This comes as more proof that Nintendo's ties with the third-party developer have been greatly improved. However, Namco's US branch had this to say in response to Bloomberg Japan's recent report on the company: "As far as developing for GameCube or Xbox, there have been no agreements signed, though Namco is considering developing for these platforms." The subsidiary added: "Can you name one software company that isn't?" Finally, Sega's chief operating office Tetsu Kayama commented: "If [Nintendo] manages to keep its current schedule, I think [the GameCube] has a chance to be a tremendous success." Tetsu's biggest fear is that Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi will hold back the GameCube hardware because he feels that there aren't enough games that deliver something new. "It will be pretty tough if it's delayed because 45% of the hardware sales in America are done during the holiday season." More as it becomes available. Source: Famitsu Weekly
Cube for the Masses NEC completes construction of new manufacturing factory; begins mass production of GameCube GPU. Japanese electronics giant NEC announced today that it has completed the construction of a new manufacturing facility in southern Japan and has begun mass producing the graphics chipset that will be used in Nintendo GameCube consoles. The company spent a whopping $761 million on the plant, which, with more than $2.8 billion in semiconductor pre-orders from Nintendo, was upraised in spot located adjacently to NEC headquarters beginning in November of 1999. The firm stated that mass production of the GameCube GPU kicked off in January of this year, with an output capacity of roughly 10,000 pieces per 8-inch wafer on a monthly basis. The fact that NEC is readying the chips at this stage suggests that Nintendo will meet its projected launch dates for GameCube in Japan and in the US without delays. More as it becomes available. 02/20/01 Here's an interesting interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Mr. Takano about the next installment of Zelda. courtesy of N-sider.com Irene Tang (Navigator): Hi, my question is, after Majoras Mask, when are we going to see the next Legend of Zelda game? And on what platform would it be? Would it be on Gamecube? Mr. Miyamoto: Mr. Takano here is actually the director for the next Zelda game. He will give a comment. I am not in a position to tell any details on the Gamecube project until May 2001. And if somehow Mr. Takano tries to go beyond that, Im going to stop him. Mr. Takano: The next platform will be Gamecube. The new controller will allow for many different actions. We are experimenting with what kind of actions the controller will accommodate. What we have to do next is work on the details of the storyline, but we first want to see what can be done with Gamecube controller. At this point Link is running around the screen and looks very cute and adorable. Mr. Miyamoto: At Nintendos Spaceworld we made some video demonstrations of Link facing off with Ganon. [The] graphics are already completed. There are still quality checks to do for the graphics. [We've also completed work on Links actions] Now we are working on the different camera angles for the fighting scenes. Can't wait to here more about this at E3. It appears that the graphics seen from the Space World demo is what we are going to get.
